Travelling post-covid: A never before seen Earth

As covid-19 tore through our cities last year, we were all driven into our homes to bide by the storm. For the first time, the internet surfaced surreal pictures of our streets framed in our new global habitat -- A world devoid of people, momentum and time.In those times of retrospection, we realised that we took travelling for granted. Our once freedom to simply parole the streets were prohibited; Our favourite gathering spots were closed; Our social bonds estranged.

Cavtat, Croatia

Basking by the waterfront, Cavtat is beloved by tourists for its white-sand beaches and crystal clear sea. Upon arrival, you have the choice of lodging in white mason villas and apartments with many having beautiful panoramic views of the entire sea front. Popular activities you can do there include enjoying a nice mid-day swim or scuba diving out in the blue waters; For those who simply want to enjoy the sea without getting yourself wet however, rent out boats were you can cruise along the ripples and be secluded with your lover or friends out in the serene. Want to just take a nice stroll instead? There is a 7km promenade of pine trees stretching out across the water. Lining along are numerous bars and restaurants like the La Boheme for its lovely seaside view and Ankora for its wine and cocktails.

But if one does get tired from the extravagance around, seek for the heart of this city in its rich historical sites. Cavtat was founded by the Greeks in the 6th century BC under the name of ‘Epidaurus’. It became Roman colony in 228 BC and lastly became part of the Republic of Ragusa in the 15th century. This millennium-long history shows itself in popular sites like the Rector’s palace, which was built in its Gothic style, but it also harmoniously combines Renaissance and Baroque elements. Similarly there are other sites like the church of St. Nikola and the Franciscan monastery as well, worth a look for some notable early Renaissance paintings and a wonderful Bukovac canvas depicting the Madonna and Child gazing at Cavtat at dusk. Visiting the countryside of the city can let you experience the culture of Dubrovnik like the Homeland Museum in the village Čilipi well-known for their embroideries and the fortress Sokol which towers high above the mountains and possesses iron-clad fortifications.

Nepal

Nepal has been described to be a paradise on earth, with cultures and traditions that has withstood millenniums. There are many temples and monuments all over Nepal that are holy and have their own importance such as the Pashupatinath temple in the capital of Kathmandu, one of the most sacred Hindu shrines in the world. It is believed to have been built as early as 400AD and it is where you can experience the cremation of the deceased and holy baths that devotees take in the river Bagmati. Next to it is also a small forest where one can spot deers and monkeys protected in the enclosure. However some people do not know that these iconic marvels can be seen in an entirely new perspective as well with the spectacular sound and light show at night. While one can appreciate the scale of structure normally, it is only when its shadow stretches and blends into the night sky can we appreciate a new sense of scale and history of these monoliths. At the Victoria falls lie one of the most “dangerous” spots on Earth as well called the “Devil’s Pool” where one can swim to a shallow pool of water right at the edge of the falls! Luckily, there are guides that will ensure your safety, allowing you to take seemingly death-defying selfies with the rainbow as your backdrop. Deservingly named a ‘melty pot’, Singapore has many ethnicities with their own ethnic streets. Once an enclave for Singapore’s Chinese immigrant population, Chinatown is a unique blend of chinese traditions and modern influences with its historic temples and medicinal halls sitting alongside bold new bars and lifestyle shops. This age-old precinct is also home to myriad different cultures and is the only Chinatown in the world to boast a Buddhist temple, a mosque and a Hindu temple along a single street. With tourists visiting even the most quiet peaks of mountains, Antarctica will soon become a place where even buildings will be constructed and its ecosystems endangered. But as for now, that is still not the time. As for now, travel to the icy paradise is still coming out of its infancy stage and the travel industries there are very careful in conserving the environment, till the point where its travellers must even wash their boots before landing to prevent a pathological invasion. It is now when the lands are still pristine, brimming with wide expanses of life should we try to catch a glimpse of that wilderness.
